House Party Massacre Interview
Having
just listened to the House Party Massacre’s album New Breed I’m left with
images of Van Halen, the Flea, Ian Curtis and that guy from The Streets all
bumping into one another in some, well, house party but instead of there being
a massacre they strangely begin to jam and decide that a collaboration of
sounds might somehow work. Of course that scenario is probably unlikely to
actually happen, right? But on the plus side House Party Massacre bring their
array of influences together culminating in a jujitsu punch of lightening
guitar, slap bass and indie punk vocals.
Anyway, I’m going to stop with the bad analogy and tenuous comparisons deciding
to ask this new, young and talented band some questions instead:
Who are House Party Massacre?
John Pita – Lead Vox/ Rocco “Rock” D’ambrosio – Lead Guitar & backing vox /
Filipe Freitas – Rhythm Guitar / Dom Pires – Bass / Seb Fina – Drums
How do you know one another?
We all met in Secondary school, through a mutual love of music. We’ve known
each other now for between 5 – 7 years depending on members; Dominic and
John have known each other since childhood.
What inspired the name?
Rock and Fil were sitting in a boring maths lesson in summer 2010 when the name
was born, the meaning of the name is basically an attack at mainstream music
because people around us very much listen to pop/rap/hip-hop mainstream
music, they listen to whatever is in the charts and what’s being played
at raves, parties… and HOUSE PARTIES. We wanted to kill that idea of our
generation, show that we’re not all the same. That’s how the name was
born.
Do you have an album?
We have our Debut EP “New Breed” out, with 6 tracks that we wrote when we were
15. It’s currently on iTunes for £4.74.
You can listen to the tracks here: House Party – New Breed
Where do you gig?
At the moment we only gig in and around London, we have played 229,
Purple Turtle, Relentless Garage, Islington Academy + sooo many more venues!
Who are your influences?
All of us have been raised on a range of music including Bob Dylan,
Leonard Cohen, Simon & Garfunkel, Van Morrison, Limp Bizkit, Papa
Roach, The Beatles, Rolling Stones Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Ramones… it’s an
almost endless list. Currently our main influences are Metallica, Avenged
Sevenfold, Nirvana, Oceana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Joy Division, System
of a Down and The Beatles!
What do you guys do in your everyday lives?
When not in college our daily routines usually consist of late wake-ups,
hours of band practice followed by celebrating newly written songs with a drink
(or ten); usually with some friends in either Camden or Primrose hill.
John is very much into martial arts, Training in Judo, Ju Jitsu and
Brazilian Ju Jitsu. He works out vigorously! Filipe, Seb are into gaming
and comic books, usually reading through some graphic novels or finishing
a newly released PS3 game. Filipe is also quite the artist, he and
his brother make our artwork and he always draws band portraits and hilarious
doodles of the members! Rock is very consumed in music, not only being in a
band he loves to help small bands get on their feet. He will gladly
produce/manage a band in need of gigs and promote them and he’s got his
own live event/gig promotions company he named after the band known as
HPM Promotions.
If you could perform anywhere in the world?
It would be in America, as part of the warped tour. The Vans Warped Tour
is well known ground for up-and-coming bands and has gotten many famous
bands where they are today. Not only this, travelling through scorching summer
heat in a cramped van with everyone shattered and broke really brings out the
brotherly love and shows what people do to follow their dream – performing the
music they love each day for a month of mayhem.
If you could be in any band at any time?
John would choose to be in Joy Division – Fave Lead singer Ian Curtis.
Rock would go with Avenged Sevenfold – Fave Guitarist Synyster Gates.
Filipe would either choose the Beatles or Nirvana – Fave Guitarist/Lead Man
Kurt Cobain.
Dom would go for Red Hot Chili Peppers – Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers and…
Seb would take System of a Down – Either John Dolmayan, Mike Portnoy or The
Rev.
What film best sums up the band’s ethos?
Casey La Scala’s niché movie “Grind”
This movie was practically written about/for us, except for one small
difference, our dream is music not skateboarding! The movie is completely
us, the way we think/act, the jokes we make and basically our whole band aura.
